Daily Harvest isn't your typical meal delivery service-it's basically what happens when someone decides frozen food can actually be good for you. And honestly? They kind of nailed it.
The company's on a mission to make it really easy to eat more sustainably grown, organic fruits and vegetables every day, which sounds like marketing speak until you actually try their stuff. Founded in 2015 by Rachel Drori when her smoothie hobby took on a life of its own, Daily Harvest has grown into something that's genuinely changed how people think about convenient healthy eating.
Here's what makes them different: everything arrives frozen solid, packed with dry ice, and ready to transform into actual meals in minutes. The menu now offers more than 100 options, including smoothies, breakfast bowls, savory bowls, flatbreads, soups, and even plant-based ice cream called "scoops". But it's not just the variety-it's the quality. All items are gluten-free, vegan, and have no additives or preservatives, with the company supporting sustainable farming and sourcing non-GMO, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The smoothies are where they really shine. Made from seeds, vegetables, fruit, and nut butter, they're nutritious, but the actual nutrient content varies incredibly widely from smoothie to smoothie, ranging all over the map in terms of calories, protein, and fat. Some pack 570 quality calories into a cup, while others hover around 100 calories, which might not constitute an entire breakfast on its own.
What's clever is how they've solved the "healthy food is inconvenient" problem. While produce in grocery stores can sit on trucks for days, theirs is gently frozen after harvest. Each cup has a use-by date on the bottom, most lasting 3 months, and everything is totally frozen so you don't have to worry about veggies going bad like you would with fresh.
The pricing sits at $7 to $12 per meal, which is relatively affordable compared to other meal delivery services. All orders over $100 receive a 10% discount, and your order must total at least $50 to check out. Daily Harvest offers three box sizes: nine, 14, or 24 items for new customers, with the minimum dropping to six items and maximum increasing to 26 items after your first box.
But here's the thing-and this is important-because Daily Harvest food is generally low in both calories and protein, it isn't as filling as some other plant-based meal delivery services, and may not be enough for many adults. Many reviewers note that because the meals and smoothies are relatively low in calories and protein, they often found themselves still hungry after eating.
So Daily Harvest works best as a supplement to your regular eating, not a complete replacement. Think of it as your freezer's insurance policy against bad food choices-when you're rushing out the door or need something quick and actually nutritious, it's there waiting.
