There's something kind of fascinating about a jewelry brand that started because two artists just wanted to make cool stuff to wear. David Yurman wasn't born from some corporate boardroom strategy session-it came from a sculptor and a painter who met in the late 1960s and decided their creative energies could merge into something wearable. And honestly? That origin story still shows up in every piece they make.
The signature cable bracelet-you know the one-came about in 1982 and basically became the brand's calling card. It's that twisted helix design that somehow manages to look both ancient and modern at the same time. The thing is, David Yurman pieces don't scream for attention the way some luxury jewelry does. They're more like that friend who always looks effortlessly put-together without trying too hard.
What's interesting is how the brand has evolved under their son Evan, who joined in 2003. He brought fresh energy to the men's and wedding collections, but the family's artistic DNA stayed intact. They've got around 50 company-owned stores across the U.S., Canada, and France, plus they're sold at over 350 locations worldwide through authorized retailers like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
The price point sits firmly in luxury territory-we're talking pieces that start in the hundreds and climb into the thousands. But here's the thing: people tend to hold onto their David Yurman jewelry. It's become one of those brands where pieces get passed down, stacked together over years, and mixed with newer designs. There's a whole TikTok subculture of people showing off their "DY stacks" and hunting for vintage pieces.
The brand's been smart about staying relevant without chasing every trend. They've partnered with celebrities like Shawn Mendes and used social media (especially Instagram and TikTok) to reach younger collectors who are getting into luxury jewelry earlier than previous generations. But they haven't abandoned their heritage-recent campaigns exploring the origins of their iconic collections have performed well across all age groups.
The craftsmanship is legit-they use precious metals, natural diamonds, and gemstones, and everything's made by their master craftspeople. Whether you're into the classic cable designs or their more contemporary sculptural pieces, there's a reason David Yurman has maintained its position as America's preeminent luxury jewelry brand for over four decades. It's that rare combination of artistic integrity and wearable luxury that actually works.
