Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Day Owl-they're basically the anti-fast-fashion answer to the backpack world, and honestly? It's kind of refreshing.
Founded in 2011 by Ian Rosenberger, this Pittsburgh-based company isn't just slapping a "sustainable" label on their products and calling it a day. They're making backpacks from recycled plastic bottles, but the story goes deeper than that. Every bag starts when a waste collector in the First Mile picks up plastic, and these workers-over 100 million people globally-make their living from what most consider trash. Day Owl actually invests in these communities that the rest of the industry ignores.
And get this: they're headquartered in Pittsburgh and make products from 100% recycled materials, repair and refurbish them to keep them in circulation for multiple owners, and when bags are used up, Day Owl uses them as input materials for new bags. That's what they mean by building the first completely circular bag company. It's ambitious, sure, but they're actually doing it.
The bags themselves? They're made with this waxed canvas fabric created from recycled bottles that's supposedly more durable and weather-resistant than traditional cotton. Plus they offer free repairs for life, which is basically unheard of these days. Notice how most companies want you to buy a new one every couple years? Day Owl's like, nah, we'll fix yours.
As a certified B Corporation, they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance. But beyond the certifications and the sustainability talk, there's something genuine here. They employ members of the Pittsburgh community to help with product design, prototyping, and repairs-giving them tools to build sustainable careers. It's local job creation wrapped up in global impact.
The price point sits around $100-$155 depending on which style you grab, which yeah, isn't cheap. But when you factor in lifetime repairs and the whole circular economy thing, it starts making more sense. And apparently New York Magazine called them "the cotton tote of backpacks," which is either the best or most confusing compliment ever.
One more thing-part of every order goes toward protecting birds. Because why not add wildlife conservation to the mix?
