Design Within Reach isn't just another furniture store-it's basically the holy grail for anyone who's ever fallen down a mid-century modern rabbit hole on Pinterest at 2 AM. Founded back in 1998 by Rob Forbes, who got frustrated trying to furnish his apartment with authentic designer pieces without jumping through hoops or waiting months for delivery, DWR set out to make iconic design actually accessible.
And when I say iconic, I mean the real deal. We're talking authentic Eames lounge chairs, not some "inspired by" knockoff you'd find elsewhere. Design Within Reach exists to make authentic modern design accessible. Authentic means that it's the real thing. Accessible means that it can be seen and touched and that it's in stock. That philosophy runs deep-they literally won't sell you a fake.
The company's grown from that initial catalog-mailing experiment into the world's largest selection of authentic modern furniture, lighting, and accessories from designers past and present. They've got physical studios scattered across major cities where you can actually sit in that $5,000 chair before committing (revolutionary concept, right?). Plus, Design Within Reach became part of the Herman Miller family in 2015, which makes perfect sense when you think about it-two companies obsessed with quality design joining forces.
What sets them apart is their curation. Design Within Reach offers the world's largest selection of authored pieces, meaning everything has a story, a designer, a purpose. You're not just buying a coffee table; you're buying a piece designed by someone who probably has their own museum exhibit. They work with both legendary names and emerging designers, so you might find a 1950s classic sitting next to something that just debuted last month.
The shopping experience feels more like browsing a really expensive museum gift shop than a typical furniture store. Their studios are designed to let you touch everything, bring your dog, even attend design events. Customers will never see a "do not touch" sign and they're invited to linger, bring their dog or kids and join us for design events. It's refreshingly un-stuffy for a place selling $3,000 dining chairs.
Sure, it's not cheap. But if you're the type who appreciates the difference between a genuine Noguchi table and a Target dupe, DWR is where you go when you're ready to invest in pieces that'll outlast your mortgage.
