Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Desigual-it's basically the fashion world's answer to "what if we just stopped caring what everyone else thinks?" And honestly, that's kind of refreshing.

The brand is known for a different kind of styling based on ethnic fabrics, colorful garments, and creative designs, which is a polite way of saying their clothes look like a kaleidoscope had a baby with a patchwork quilt. But that's the whole point. Thomas Meyer created Desigual in 1984, in the Barcelona neighbourhood of El Raval, when he designed a jacket that is now considered one of the fashion sector's first ever upcycled products, and filmmaker Isabel Coixet whispered a word, "Desigual", and accompanied it with the motto "no es lo mismo" ("it's not the same").

Notice how some brands try to be different but end up looking exactly like everyone else trying to be different? Desigual actually commits to the bit. In 2022, the firm has a presence in 109 countries, with 393 mono-brand stores and more than 2,600 employees worldwide, 547 of whom work at the Barcelona headquarters. That's not a small operation-they've managed to scale "weird" into a global business, which is honestly impressive.

The Mediterranean influence runs deep here. They draw inspiration from the Mediterranean, the sun, the light and the lust for life, and you can see it in every piece. Think bold prints, unexpected color combinations, and textures that make you want to reach out and touch them. It's the kind of fashion that makes people either love you or think you're slightly unhinged-there's really no middle ground.

And they're not just about looking good. They love their natural environment and work to make their processes and creations more sustainable every day. The brand has been pushing sustainability initiatives, which matters when you're producing at this scale. They've also implemented some pretty cool tech-RFID technology has been implemented across all Desigual stores, enabling the inventory to be managed accurately and in real time.

What really sets them apart is this philosophy that fashion should be fun, not stressful. They employ more than 4,600 people from more than 100 different nationalities who share a unique way of working that they like to call Fun & Profit. It's like they figured out you can make money AND not take yourself too seriously.

The clothes themselves? They're for people who want to stand out at brunch, not blend in. You're getting dresses with wild prints, jackets that look like wearable art, and accessories that basically scream "I have opinions about things." It's maximalist fashion for people who think minimalism is boring.
