Editor's Take

So here's the thing about DL1961 - they're basically doing what every denim brand claims they're doing, except they actually mean it. Founded in 2008 using XFIT LYCRA, a fabric it has patented, this New York-based brand has been on a mission to prove that sustainable doesn't have to mean sacrificing fit or style.

And the numbers? They're kind of wild. The average pair of jeans requires 1,500 gallons of water, but DL1961 requires just ten gallons at most. Ten. That's not a typo. When you consider that most of us own multiple pairs of jeans, that water savings adds up fast. The company uses an eco-friendly manufacturing process that it introduced in 2013 to use less water, waste, and dye, which basically means they figured out how to make premium denim without destroying the planet in the process.

But let's talk about what really matters - the fit. The brand is known for its four-way stretch, designed to be slimming and to prevent sagging. You know that annoying thing where your jeans look great in the morning but by lunchtime they're baggy and weird? Yeah, DL1961 solved that problem. Their patented fabric technology means these jeans actually hold their shape, which is probably why celebrities like Katie Holmes, Reese Witherspoon, and Meghan Markle keep wearing them.

Notice how some brands slap "sustainable" on their label and call it a day? DL1961 isn't playing that game. They're a premium essentials brand with roots in vertical integration, offering elevated denim, knits, and ready-to-wear for women, men, kids, and pets. The vertical integration part is key - it means they control their entire supply chain, from fiber to finished product. The company uses renewable energy from solar panels for their factory operations, and they track every single pair of jeans with environmental impact software.

Named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in 2023, DL1961 has become what fashion editors call a "press-loved brand" - basically, it's the denim line that stylists and fashion insiders actually recommend when the cameras are off. They've expanded beyond just women's jeans too, offering everything from maternity lines to kids' denim to, yes, even pet apparel.

The brand recently partnered with Recover to create what they're calling the world's first high-performance circular jeans, using post-consumer waste cotton fibers. So basically, your old t-shirts and worn-out jeans can become new DL1961 denim. It's the kind of innovation that makes you wonder why more brands aren't doing this.

What sets them apart isn't just the sustainability angle, though. According to Vogue journalist Liana Satenstein, DL1961 is known for its jumpsuits and easygoing styles - they've managed to create pieces that work for real life, not just Instagram photos. And with prices that position them as premium but not completely out of reach, they've found that sweet spot where quality meets accessibility.
