Returns

Are there refunds or credits for unused rental days?
When using the prepaid car rental option with Dollar, there are no refunds or credits for unused rental days. However, most Dollar car rental reservations are refundable before pickup. Pay-at-pickup reservations are usually fully refundable.

What if I return the car early?
Early Return Fee: Applies if you did not prepay your rental charges and returned the vehicle more than 24 hours early before the return time indicated in your rental agreement. You will only pay for the days used, but there will be a $25 charge to partially compensate Dollar for our inability to rent your vehicle during the remaining time reserved for your use.

How long does it take to get your money back from Dollar car rental?
Refunds typically process within 7-10 business days. Bank processing times may cause additional delays. Dollar Rent A Car usually refunds your security deposit within 7 to 10 business days after the vehicle is returned in good condition. However, the exact time frame can vary depending on your bank or credit card provider.

What is the cancellation policy for prepaid bookings?
If you cancel 48 hours prior to your pick up, you will be refunded in full. If you cancel less than 48 hours in advance, you'll receive a refund minus USD 57 for fully prepaid bookings or if your online payment is less than USD 57, no refund will be made for your car hire booking.

Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Dollar-it's kind of the unsung hero of car rentals. Founded back in 1965 in Los Angeles (originally as "Dollar A Day Rent A Car," which tells you everything about their pricing philosophy), the company's been playing the value game for nearly 60 years now. And honestly? They've gotten pretty good at it.

What makes Dollar interesting is how they've positioned themselves. Dollar typically caters to budget-conscious leisure travelers, which means they're not trying to be everything to everyone. They know their lane-affordable, straightforward rentals for people who just need to get from point A to point B without breaking the bank. No frills, no pretense, just cars at prices that make sense.

But here's where it gets more interesting. Dollar is owned by The Hertz Corporation, along with other agencies including Hertz Rent A Car, Firefly Car Rental and Thrifty Car Rental. That 2012 acquisition was a big deal-suddenly Dollar had the backing and infrastructure of one of the biggest names in the business. Think of it like when your scrappy local coffee shop gets bought by a major chain but keeps its original vibe and pricing.

The numbers tell a compelling story too. Dollar operates in more than 650 locations across 53 countries, with a particularly strong presence at airports. In the late 1990s, rental locations in Florida, California, Hawaii, and Nevada were responsible for 80% of Dollar's 1996 fiscal revenue, and 76% in 1997-basically, they set up shop where people actually vacation. Smart.

And they've evolved beyond just basic economy cars. In recent years, Dollar has expanded their fleet to offer more upscale rental vehicles, which include vehicles such as the BMW X1, BMW X3, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX60, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Mercedes-Benz C Class, and Mercedes-Benz E Class. So yeah, "budget" doesn't mean you're stuck with a beat-up sedan anymore.

The Dollar Express Rewards program is worth mentioning-it's their loyalty thing that lets you earn points toward free rental days, skip lines, and add additional drivers for free. Pretty standard stuff, but it works. Notice how they're not reinventing the wheel here, just making the basics work really well.

The company's headquarters moved to Estero, Florida in 2015, right near Fort Myers. Makes sense when you think about it-Florida's the largest car rental market per capita in the country, and having your HQ near one of the busiest tourism states gives you a front-row seat to your core customer base.

What I appreciate about Dollar is the transparency of their model. They're not pretending to be luxury. They're not promising you'll feel like James Bond. They're saying, "Hey, you need a car, we've got one, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg." In a world where everything's trying to be premium, there's something refreshing about a company that just does one thing well-affordable car rentals for regular people taking regular trips.
