Editor's Take

Drunk Elephant isn't just another skincare brand-it's basically a philosophy wrapped in colorful packaging that's taken over bathroom counters everywhere. Founded by Tiffany Masterson in 2012, this brand built its entire identity around what they call the "Suspicious 6"-six ingredients they believe are behind most skin problems.

Here's the thing that makes Drunk Elephant different: they're obsessed with biocompatibility. Instead of getting caught up in the whole "natural versus synthetic" debate, they focus on whether ingredients actually play nice with your skin. They're committed to using only ingredients that benefit skin's health and avoiding the 6 ingredients that they believe are at the root of almost every skin issue. When the Suspicious 6 are entirely removed from one's routine, skin can reset and return to a healthy, balanced state.

The brand calls this reset a "#drunkbreak," and honestly, it's kind of genius marketing. They've managed to turn ingredient elimination into a lifestyle movement. Drunk Elephant is a clean skincare brand with a commitment to leaving the "Suspicious 6™" out of every formula. These include essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances/dyes, and SLS.

What's fascinating is how they've positioned themselves in the social media landscape. Drunk Elephant has amassed a huge following on Instagram through their smart social media marketing strategies. They have about 1.7 million followers on Instagram, and this growth is all due to their unique marketing. But here's where it gets interesting-and controversial.

The brand has become absolutely massive with Gen Alpha, those kids born after 2010. The mid to high-end skincare brand is well known for its 'bronzi drops', multivitamin eye cream, and a multitude of serums and moisturizers, and respected by its cult following because of the ingredients they choose and avoid, and for being vegan and cruelty-free. Having seen Drunk Elephant promoted by their favorite influencers, and being drawn in by the colorful, aesthetically pleasing packing, the brand's products have solidified their place at the top of tweens' wishlists.

This popularity with younger users has sparked some serious debate in the skincare community. Some professionals worry about kids using products with active ingredients, while others argue the brand has products suitable for all ages. The debate has become so prominent on social media that Drunk Elephant has put out their own post addressing the concerns and detailing the products that are tween-friendly.

The brand's approach to product development is pretty unique too. They think of skincare routines like smoothies-you mix and match products based on what your skin needs that day. They think of skincare routines as smoothies. Much like you choose ingredients for your daily smoothie based on your skin's cravings, pick products for a.m. and p.m. smoothies based on how your skin feels.

Now owned by Shiseido (they acquired it for around $845 million in 2019), Drunk Elephant has maintained its founder-driven philosophy while scaling globally. The brand's success story is pretty remarkable-from a stay-at-home mom's idea to a nearly billion-dollar acquisition in just seven years.
