Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Eberjey-it's basically what happens when two women in their twenties get fed up with lingerie that's designed for everyone except the person actually wearing it.

Back in 1996, Ali Mejia and Mariela Rovito looked around at the sleepwear market and saw nothing but push-up this and lace-for-him that. They wanted pajamas you could actually sleep in. Revolutionary, right? But kind of was, actually. The whole industry was stuck in this Victoria's Secret fever dream, and these two were like, "What if we just made stuff that feels good?"

And they did. Started small-like, really small. Rented a booth at a trade show in New York, sat there for three days with basically zero visitors, were about to pack it in. Then one buyer walked in on the last day, loved everything, bought the entire stock. That's the kind of origin story you can't make up.

What makes Eberjey different is this obsession with fabric. They source materials from all over the world-TENCEL Modal that feels like butter, washable silk that's actually machine-friendly (which, let's be honest, is a game-changer). The Gisele PJ set has basically become their calling card. People rave about it. Like, genuinely can't shut up about how soft it is.

The brand's grown up quite a bit since those early days. They're now in over 1,200 stores worldwide, won Designer of the Year in 2020 from Salon International de la Lingerie, and expanded way beyond just women's stuff. They've got men's, kids', whole family matching sets-the works. But they've managed to keep that original vibe: comfortable, beautiful, designed for the person wearing it, not performing in it.

Their retail stores (five of them now, from Miami to Manhattan) feel more like someone's really nice bedroom than a typical shop. Light, airy, intimate. You can actually touch the fabrics, which matters when your whole thing is about how stuff feels against your skin.

The pandemic was weirdly good for them. Turns out when everyone's stuck at home, quality loungewear becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity. People discovered that honoring your downtime isn't indulgent-it's essential. Eberjey was already there, waiting with open arms and the softest pajamas you've ever felt.

What's interesting is how they've stayed true to their mission while growing. They're not trying to be sexy or edgy or whatever the trend is. They're just making pretty things that make women feel good. Simple concept, but apparently it took two determined entrepreneurs to actually do it right.
