Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Everlywell-it's basically what happens when someone gets fed up with the whole "wait three weeks for a doctor's appointment just to get basic blood work" situation. Founded in 2015 in Austin, Texas, this company figured out how to turn your kitchen table into a mini lab.

The concept's pretty straightforward. You order a test kit online, collect your sample at home, and mail it back using prepaid shipping. Results typically come back within 3-5 business days, which honestly beats the heck out of playing phone tag with your doctor's office for two weeks.

What's kind of fascinating is how they've managed to make medical testing feel less... medical. They offer nearly 20 different at-home health tests, covering everything from food sensitivities to thyroid function to STD screening. And they've partnered with CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited labs, so you're not dealing with some sketchy operation in someone's garage.

The pricing structure's interesting too. Tests range from $15 to $299, and they offer a membership called Control for $24.99 monthly that includes one free test and 20% off additional tests. That membership thing actually makes sense if you're the type who likes to monitor your health regularly-kind of like a Netflix subscription, but for your biomarkers.

But here's where it gets really clever: they've made the results actually readable. Anyone who's ever stared at lab results that might as well be written in ancient Sumerian will appreciate this. The results are color-coded and include detailed descriptions of what the test and findings mean.

The company's grown pretty significantly since that Shark Tank appearance in 2017. You can now buy some of their kits at major retailers like Walmart, Walgreens, Target, and CVS, though the full selection is still only available through their website.

One thing that's worth noting-and this is where the convenience factor really shines-is that research indicates self-collected samples can be just as accurate as those collected by a clinician, as long as directions are properly followed. So you're not sacrificing accuracy for convenience, which is pretty much the holy grail of modern healthcare.
