Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Columbus, Ohio-it's kind of having a moment. And not in that forced, trying-too-hard way some cities do. This is real.
You know how some places just quietly stack up wins while everyone's looking elsewhere? That's Columbus. Named a Top 10 Best Big City in the U.S. by Condé Nast Traveler's 2025 Readers' Choice Awards, and honestly, it makes sense once you dig in. The city's been collecting accolades like they're going out of style-best food city, friendliest city, you name it.
But what actually makes Columbus interesting isn't the awards. It's the vibe. Picture this: COSI (the Center of Science and Industry) features 300 interactive exhibits and a life-size T. rex display-and it's been voted the number one science museum in the country five times. Not once. Five times. That's not luck.
The food scene? Way better than you'd expect. Columbus is the birthplace of Wendy's and White Castle, sure, but the city's moved way past fast food. We're talking farm-to-table spots, international influences from Somalia to Vietnam, and a culinary landscape that's earned serious recognition. The North Market alone has been operating since 1876, with dozens of vendors serving everything from Vietnamese to Nepalese food.
And then there's the weird stuff that makes a city memorable. RushSouth Whitewater Park is the longest urban whitewater course in the world. In 2023, it hosted the ICF Kayak Freestyle World Championships with over 300 athletes from more than 20 countries. You can literally go from lazy river vibes in the morning to class V rapids in the afternoon-in the middle of a major city.
What's cool is how accessible everything is. You'll be only a one-day drive or one-hour flight from more than half of the USA's population. The city's basically in the middle of everything, which explains why it's become such a convention hub.
The neighborhoods each have their own personality. German Village with its 19th-century brick buildings. Franklinton with its industrial arts vibe. The Arena District where you can catch the Blue Jackets, the Crew, or the Clippers. And Ohio State's massive campus (nearly 50,000 students) keeps the energy young and the restaurant scene diverse.
Look, Columbus isn't trying to be New York or Chicago. It's doing its own thing-progressive, affordable, creative-and apparently doing it well enough that people are starting to notice. Sometimes the best cities are the ones that don't need to shout about it.
