Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Fahlo - it's basically jewelry that does something most bracelets can't. Each one comes with a real animal you can track on your phone. Not a cartoon or a random stock photo, but an actual elephant wandering through Kenya or a sea turtle cruising the Atlantic. Since our start in 2018, Fahlo has donated over $2.5 million to conservation partners, which is kind of wild when you think about it starting as a modest family business.
The concept is pretty straightforward. You buy a bracelet (they start around $16.95), scan a QR code, download their app, and boom - you're following your new animal friend. Maybe it's a polar bear named Gerald trudging across Arctic ice, or a penguin doing penguin things along the South American coast. The tracking isn't live-live (that would drain the animal's transmitter battery way too fast), but you get regular updates showing where they've been, what they're up to, and little facts about their journey.
What makes this more than just a gimmick is the partnership angle. Fahlo works with legit organizations - Sea Turtle Conservancy, Save the Elephants, Polar Bears International, and about 15 others. These aren't fly-by-night operations; they're established nonprofits doing actual field research. When you buy a bracelet, a portion goes directly to whichever organization is tracking your animal. It's the kind of thing that makes gift-giving easier too - way better than another generic bracelet that'll sit in a drawer.
The bracelets themselves are simple, elastic, one-size-fits-most affairs. Nothing fancy, but that's kind of the point. You're not buying haute couture; you're buying into a story. And people seem genuinely into it. Parents love them for teaching kids about ecosystems (one reviewer mentioned their 3-year-old can now explain what an ecosystem is). Animal lovers collect them like Pokemon. There's even a monthly subscription club if you really want to go all-in.
One thing worth noting: On average, transmitters will send signals for around one year. Sometimes signals will continue for up to two years, other times less than one. We guarantee tracking for six months. So your animal's journey isn't forever, but that's just how wildlife tracking works. If it stops early, they'll give you a replacement animal to follow.
The company's been around since 2018, founded by two best friends (Carter Forbes and Daniel Gunter, who recently made Forbes' 30 Under 30 list). They've grown from a small operation to something with 20-49 employees and a presence in zoos and aquariums nationwide. Not bad for selling bracelets with a conscience.
