Editor's Take
You know that friend who's always got the perfect fabric for whatever project you're dreaming up? That's basically Fat Quarter Shop in a nutshell. Started by Kimberly Jolly back in 2003 as a side hustle from her house, this little operation has grown into something pretty remarkable.
What makes them different isn't just the massive selection-though seriously, they've got over 12,000 bolts of fabric in stock. It's how they've managed to keep that personal touch while scaling up. They run daily flash sales starting at 8am CST with discounts up to 90% off, which is kind of genius if you think about it. Creates this sense of urgency and discovery that keeps people coming back.
But here's what's really smart: they've built an entire ecosystem around quilting. Not just selling fabric, but offering quilt patterns, helpful videos and blog articles. They've got YouTube tutorials, cross-stitch supplies, even their own line of notions. It's like they figured out that selling fabric is just the entry point-what people really want is to be part of a community.
The business model is pretty fascinating too. They're online-only and don't accept shoppers at their warehouse, which keeps overhead low while serving customers nationwide. And they're not standing still-they're building a $25 million, 125,000-square-foot facility in Kyle, Texas, which tells you something about their growth trajectory.
They ship over 30,000 products to customers throughout the U.S. and all over the world, but somehow they've maintained that small-business feel. Maybe it's because Kimberly started by cutting, packing and shipping right out of her house during evenings and weekends, committed to delivering top-notch service for every single order.
The quilting world can be pretty traditional, but Fat Quarter Shop seems to get that modern crafters want convenience without sacrificing quality. They've basically created the Amazon of quilting supplies, except with way more personality and actual expertise behind it.
