Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Final Draft-it's basically the software that every screenwriter either swears by or feels like they should be using. And honestly? There's a reason for that.
For over 30 years, Final Draft has been the number one-selling screenwriting software, used by 95% of film and television productions. That's not just marketing speak. When you're talking about industry giants like J.J. Abrams, James Cameron, and Aaron Sorkin all using the same tool, you start to understand why it's become synonymous with professional screenwriting.
But what actually makes it special? Well, the automatic formatting is kind of the whole point. Final Draft does formatting automatically-you get the words down, and Final Draft does the rest. And if you've ever tried to manually format a screenplay in Microsoft Word, you know exactly why that matters. The margins, the spacing, the character names-it all has to be perfect, and Final Draft handles that so you can actually focus on, you know, writing.
The software's come a long way from its 1990 origins. Final Draft was co-founded in 1990 by Marc Madnick and Ben Cahan, who recognized that Hollywood lacked a word-processor capable of automatically formatting a script to the entertainment industry's stringent standards. They saw a gap and filled it. And in 2013, the program was awarded the prestigious Primetime Emmy Engineering Award-which is basically Hollywood saying "yeah, we really need this thing."
What's interesting is how Final Draft has evolved beyond just being formatting software. They've added features like the Beat Board for visual planning, real-time collaboration tools, and even goal-setting features to track your writing productivity. Final Draft offers fast, secure online collaboration that allows multiple writers to edit scripts and work on the Beat Board simultaneously, whether they're around the corner or around the world. That's huge for writing teams working remotely.
In 2016, Final Draft was acquired by Cast & Crew, based in Burbank, California. Cast & Crew is a major player in entertainment payroll and production services, so Final Draft now sits within a larger ecosystem of industry tools. That acquisition seems to have given them more resources to keep innovating.
And they're not just about selling software. Final Draft continues to unearth the best new talent through the Big Break Screenwriting Contest, which every year awards over $100,000 in cash and prizes, and has launched the careers of countless new screenwriters. They're actively invested in the screenwriting community through educational resources, podcasts, and networking events.
The price point-around $250 for the full version-can be steep for beginners. But there's educational pricing, and honestly, if you're serious about screenwriting, it's kind of the cost of entry. The software works on both Mac and Windows, and there's even a mobile app called Final Draft Go for iPhone users who want to write on the go.
Is it perfect? No software is. But when 95% of the industry uses something, there's usually a good reason. Final Draft has become the standard because it works, it's reliable, and it lets writers focus on storytelling instead of formatting headaches.
