Editor's Take
Food52 isn't just another recipe website-it's basically the cool older sibling of the food world that somehow makes everyone feel welcome at the dinner table. Founded back in 2009 by Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs, two former New York Times food writers, the whole thing started with this brilliant idea: what if home cooks could actually contribute to a cookbook instead of just buying one?
But here's where Food52 gets interesting-they didn't stay stuck in the recipe box. In 2013, they launched their Shop, bringing together like-minded makers and artisans, and eventually grew to include home goods and crafts that support joyful living. So now you can discover a genius recipe for brown butter cookies and immediately buy the perfect baking sheet to make them on. It's dangerously convenient.
The company reported $30 million in revenue in 2018, and private equity firm TCG acquired a majority stake in 2019, later investing $80 million in 2021. That funding helped them acquire Schoolhouse (a lighting company) and expand their brand family. Their recipes and articles have won James Beard Awards, their cookbooks hit the New York Times bestseller list, and their Instagram has millions of followers.
The community aspect is huge-they've grown to over 13 million people who genuinely seem to care about sharing cooking tips and celebrating each other's kitchen wins. It's like having a really knowledgeable friend who always knows exactly what cookbook you need or which wooden spoon will change your life.
