Editor's Take
You know those big-headed vinyl figures with the soulless black eyes that somehow manage to be adorable? Yeah, that's Funko. And honestly, they've kind of taken over the world without most people even realizing it.
Funko is a leading pop culture lifestyle brand that provides connection to pop culture with a product assortment that includes vinyl figures, action toys, plush, apparel, board games, housewares, NFTs, and accessories. But let's be real-it's the Pop! Vinyl figures that made them a household name. Walk into any Target, GameStop, or Hot Topic, and you'll see walls of these things staring back at you. Characters from everything. And I mean everything. Marvel superheroes? Check. Obscure 80s cartoon characters? Got 'em. Your favorite K-pop star? Probably already exists in three different variants.
What's kind of wild is how Funko basically created a collecting culture around accessibility. Unlike traditional action figures or high-end collectibles that can run you hundreds of dollars, most Funko Pops retail between $10-$15. That low barrier to entry means anyone can start a collection, which is exactly what millions of people have done. Funko has over 1,100 licenses with different companies-basically, if it exists in pop culture, Funko's probably made a figure of it.
The company's been around since 1998, but they really hit their stride in the 2010s when the Pop! Vinyl line exploded. Funko can have a product from concept to shelf in 70 days, which means they can capitalize on trends faster than pretty much anyone else in the collectibles game. New movie coming out? Funko's already got figures ready to go. Viral moment on social media? Give it a few months and there'll probably be a Pop for that too.
They've also got this whole ecosystem built around exclusivity and scarcity. Chase variants (the rare versions), convention exclusives, store-specific releases-it's all designed to keep collectors hunting. Some people love it, some people find it exhausting, but it definitely keeps the community engaged. And there is a community. Reddit threads, YouTube channels, Instagram accounts all dedicated to Funko hunting and collecting.
The headquarters is in Everett, Washington, and they've got this massive retail location there that's basically a Funko theme park. Funko is an immersive retail experience the whole family can enjoy. Take pictures within your favorite movie and pop culture moments, celebrate your fandom and find new ones. Stop by today for one of the best family friendly activities in Everett, WA. They've also got locations in Hollywood and Arizona, each with their own exclusive releases and photo ops.
At the end of the day, Funko figured out how to make fandom tangible and affordable. Whether you're a casual collector with a few favorites on your desk or a hardcore completionist with an entire room dedicated to your collection, there's probably a Funko Pop out there with your name on it. Literally-they even do custom ones now.
