Editor's Take

So here's the thing about G-Star RAW - they're not just another denim brand trying to sell you jeans. Founded in Amsterdam in 1989, this Dutch company basically built its reputation on raw denim, the unwashed and untreated kind that most fashion houses were ignoring at the time. And that's kind of their whole vibe, honestly.

What makes them different? Well, they pioneered anatomic denim - the first-ever 3D-shaped jeans. Think about that for a second. While everyone else was making flat fabric into pants, G-Star was literally engineering jeans to move with your body. It's the kind of innovation that sounds obvious now but was pretty revolutionary back in 1996.

The military influence runs deep here. G-Star draws inspiration from vintage military apparel from around the world, which explains why their pieces have that utilitarian, almost architectural feel. You'll notice it in the construction details, the pocket placements, the way seams are reinforced. It's functional fashion that doesn't apologize for being practical.

But they're not stuck in the past. In September 2023, WHP Global acquired the company, completing the transaction in December. And they've been collaborating with some seriously high-profile names - Pharrell Williams partnered with them on "Raw for the Oceans," a collection made from recycled ocean plastic, presented at the American Museum of Natural History. More recently, they dropped a collaboration with Walter Van Beirendonck called "Denim with Balls" in February 2025.

With over 6,500 selling points worldwide and flagship stores in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and London, they've grown way beyond their Amsterdam roots. The scale is impressive, but what's more interesting is how they've maintained that edge - that commitment to treating denim as something worth obsessing over. Because at the end of the day, that's what sets them apart. They're not making fast fashion. They're making pieces designed to last, with sustainability and innovation baked into the DNA.
