Editor's Take
You know what's wild? Ghirardelli is the third-oldest chocolate company in the US, and they've been doing this since 1852. That's like, before the Civil War ended. But here's the thing that really gets me-they're one of the few chocolate companies in the United States to control every aspect of its chocolate manufacturing process, rejecting up to 40% of the cocoa seeds shipped in order to select what the company calls the "highest quality" seeds.
And honestly? You can taste the difference. Those chocolate squares everyone's obsessed with? The most famous products in the brand portfolio of Ghirardelli are the popular Squares which were developed in 1999. So they're relatively new in Ghirardelli terms, but they've become the thing everyone thinks of when they hear the name.
What's fascinating is how this whole empire started. During the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, founder Domenico Ghirardelli shrewdly discovered that the exhausted miners were hungry for treats and needed something to spend their gold dust on. Smart guy, right? While everyone else was digging for gold, he was basically printing money by feeding chocolate to the people who found it.
The San Francisco connection runs deep too. Today, the historic chocolate factory at Ghirardelli Square is one of San Francisco's landmarks. But here's something most people don't know-production facilities moved to San Leandro, California in 1967. So while the tourist spot is still in the city, the actual chocolate making happens across the bay.
Ghirardelli, with its creativity and passion for quality, proved to be a perfect fit for Lindt & Sprüngli and has been part of the brand portfolio since 1998. Yeah, they're owned by a Swiss company now, but they've kept that American chocolate heritage thing going strong.
The sundae game is serious business for them too. Since the 1960s Ghirardelli has also moved to focus on a restaurant division by selling ice cream sundaes, complete with their famous hot fudge chocolate sauce. And apparently they take their hot fudge so seriously that they feature fresh hot fudge handmade daily in store from rich Ghirardelli chocolate.
