Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Grayers-it's one of those brands that kind of flies under the radar, but once you know about it, you wonder why everyone isn't wearing it. Founded about five years ago by Peter Georgiou, who spent 12 years at Ralph Lauren, the brand has this interesting origin story. Georgiou was reading about Britain in the 1930s when young men at Oxford and Cambridge switched from wearing three-piece suits to gray flannel trousers, commonly known as Grayers, and the casual menswear movement was born. Pretty cool, right?

What makes Grayers different is their obsessive focus on fabric. And I mean obsessive. It's rare for a brand in Grayers' category to develop and weave all of their own fabric, but they do it because they're basically fabric nerds in the best way possible. They're not just slapping logos on generic wholesale textiles-they're actually creating custom weaves and developing unique patterns that you won't find anywhere else.

The whole vibe is what Georgiou calls "the Forgotten Middle"-that sweet spot between fast fashion garbage and those artisanal Brooklyn brands that charge $400 for a flannel shirt. There's an artisanal movement in small studios that's inaccessibly priced, so they're creating their version of artisanal-well-crafted with stand-out quality, fine details, the softest fabrics, offbeat colors-all rooted in the classics-at a rare value. Basically, you're getting that hand-crafted quality without needing to take out a small loan.

Their signature pieces include these incredibly soft flannel shirts with chambray accents and a heftier brushed cotton fabric that feels substantial without being bulky. But they've also done some creative stuff like knit blazers made from French terry fabric-the kind of thing that looks tailored but feels like you're wearing your favorite sweatshirt. One of their bestsellers was something called the Albermarle knit blazer, and apparently they couldn't make enough to keep up with demand.

The brand operates primarily online now, though they did have a pop-up store in New York's West Village at 304 Bleecker Street (currently temporarily closed). You can also find their stuff at select retailers like Nordstrom and various boutiques across the country. The price points are genuinely reasonable-we're talking shirts in the $88-$118 range, pants around $110, and blazers from $195-$345. Not cheap, but not insane either, especially when you consider the quality and the fact that everything's custom-developed.

What's refreshing is their customer service attitude. Their contact page literally says "It's called customer service for a reason. We want ours to deliver big time." And they seem to mean it-they've got actual humans you can email or call, not just some automated chatbot nightmare.

If you're the kind of person who appreciates the details-like why a particular fabric drapes a certain way, or why one flannel feels different from another-Grayers is worth checking out. They're doing something genuinely different in a sea of sameness, and they're doing it at prices that won't make you wince.
