Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Green Sprouts - they've been doing the eco-friendly baby thing since way before it was trendy. Like, 1982 trendy. Founded by a devoted mother of two young girls, the company started as a humble mail-order business and has been pioneering babies' health and environmental sustainability for over 40 years.

What's kind of fascinating is their origin story with that swim diaper. The Original Swim Diaper has a 40-year track record with continuous improvement, featuring a patented triple-layer design that's breathable, absorbent, and waterproof. And get this - it's trusted by swim schools and private swim instructors nationwide. That's not nothing when you're talking about a product that's been around since the early '80s.

But they're not just about swim diapers anymore. Today, their product categories span Swim & Sun, Mealtime, Daily Care, & Mindful Play. They've basically built out a whole ecosystem of baby products, all with this focus on safer materials. The company went from a mail-order business operated out of founder Becky Cannon's home in Asheville, NC, to a global presence as a leading swimwear and baby care brand with $20MM in annual sales, becoming one of the first companies to eliminate BPA from its products six years before the FDA required them to do so.

Notice how they're really specific about what they're avoiding? They're not just saying "non-toxic" and calling it a day. The materials thing is actually pretty interesting - they developed something called Sprout Ware, which is plant-based plastic. And they're a 1% for the Planet partner, which means they're putting their money where their mouth is on the environmental stuff.

The company's had some interesting challenges too. They rebranded from "i play" to Green Sprouts back in 2020 to unify everything under one name. For over 40 years, Green Sprouts has focused on providing a full range of everyday baby essentials that foster natural health for whole child development. Then in 2023, they were acquired by O2C Brands, which is owned by a Chicago-based private equity firm.

What really stands out is how they've managed to stay relevant. Most companies from the '80s either disappeared or got completely absorbed into something unrecognizable. But Green Sprouts? They're still woman-owned (well, were until the acquisition), still based in Asheville, and still pushing that same mission about safer baby products and environmental responsibility. That kind of consistency over four decades is actually pretty rare in the baby products world.
