Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Gretchen Scott Designs-it's basically the antithesis of stuffy fashion. You know those brands that take themselves way too seriously? This isn't one of them. The company literally sews their mantra into every piece: "Laugh More, Gripe Less, Ignore Critics, Say Yes, Order Dessert, Love Life." And honestly? That philosophy kind of permeates everything they do.
The brand started in founder Gretchen Scott's living room with flowered baskets-glue guns, silk flowers, the whole craft-project vibe-before evolving into a full lifestyle brand. Which is kind of wild when you think about it. Before launching her namesake line, she worked as Market Research Director at Smithsonian magazine, sold advertising for Conde Nast, renovated houses, and ran a decorating business. Talk about reinventing yourself.
But what really sets this brand apart is the design philosophy. India plays an integral role in the aesthetic-hand blocks, complex patterns, and those vibrant colors that basically define the look. You'll notice the prints immediately. They're bold without being overwhelming, colorful without screaming at you. The clothes are designed to pack easily and transition from day to night, office to dinner, carpool to swimming pool-with clean silhouettes and surprise elements.
The sizing is refreshingly inclusive too. They offer XXS to XXXL, which feels like they actually want real women of all shapes to wear their stuff. And the pieces themselves? Think tunics, dresses, pants, and jackets in vibrantly printed cotton. Clean lines, forgiving silhouettes, timeless styles-all with that sense of playfulness that can go from errands to cocktails without missing a beat.
They've got three brick-and-mortar stores now-Charleston, Jupiter, and Naples-plus a robust online presence. Free shipping kicks in at $150, which is pretty standard for contemporary brands. And they're not just about selling clothes either. Their first philanthropic project raised money for Elizabeth's Hope, part of the Children's Brain Tumor Project at Weill Cornell, selling thousands of cotton blouses and donating 100% of proceeds.
The vibe is resort-wear-meets-everyday-chic. It's for women who want to look pulled together without trying too hard. Notice how the brand keeps circling back to joy and playfulness? That's not marketing fluff-it's genuinely woven into the DNA of what they make. Whether that resonates with you probably depends on whether you're the type who orders dessert.
