Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Hallmark-most people think they know what it is, but there's way more going on than just greeting cards at the drugstore checkout.

Founded back in 1910 by Joyce Hall (yeah, that's where the name comes from), this Kansas City company basically invented the modern greeting card industry. And they've been family-owned this whole time, which is kind of rare for a company pulling in around $4 billion annually. That's not nothing.

But Hallmark isn't just cards anymore. Not even close. They own Crayola-yes, those crayons you grew up with. They run three cable channels that have become a cultural phenomenon, especially during the holidays when "Countdown to Christmas" becomes basically required viewing for millions of people. And their Keepsake Ornament collection? It started in 1973 with just 18 ornaments, and now there are about 11 million American households collecting them. Some people treat ornament hunting like a competitive sport.

The company employs around 20,000 to 30,000 people worldwide (numbers vary depending on the season), and they've got about 900 artists, designers, and writers cranking out more than 19,000 new and redesigned products every year. They offer 48,000 products at any given time. Think about that for a second-that's an insane amount of inventory to manage.

What's interesting is how they've adapted. Sure, you can still walk into one of their 2,000 Gold Crown stores across five countries, but they've also built out Hallmark+, a streaming service that combines feel-good content with shopping rewards. It's basically Netflix meets loyalty program, which sounds weird but actually makes sense for their brand.

Their return policy is surprisingly generous-90 days for online purchases with free return shipping. And they actually cover your original shipping cost too, which most retailers don't do. You just have to call them to start the process; there's no online portal for returns.

The stores themselves have become destination shopping spots, especially during the holidays. Most locations are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though hours vary by location. They're closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, which makes sense.

And here's something you might not know: Hallmark introduced their famous slogan "When you care enough to send the very best" way back in 1944. A marketing executive named C.E. Goodman wrote it on a 3x5 card, and that card is still on display at their headquarters. Sometimes the simplest ideas stick around the longest.

The company's also gotten into some interesting partnerships lately-they're doing licensed ornaments with Kraft Heinz brands, which means you can literally hang a tiny Oscar Mayer Wienermobile on your Christmas tree. It's quirky, but that's kind of their thing now.

Whether you're looking for a birthday card, a Snoopy ornament, or just want to binge-watch predictable-but-comforting romance movies, Hallmark's probably got you covered. They've figured out how to stay relevant by being exactly what people expect while quietly expanding into spaces you wouldn't necessarily think of. Not bad for a company that started with two shoeboxes full of postcards.
