Editor's Take

You know that feeling when you slip into your favorite t-shirt? That's basically Hanes in a nutshell. This global leader in manufacturing basics and innerwear has been synonymous with comfort, quality, and value for generations, and honestly, they've mastered the art of making clothes that just work.

Founded way back in 1900 as Shamrock Knitting Mills by John Wesley Hanes in Winston-Salem, the company has grown into something pretty remarkable. In 2006, Sara Lee Corporation spun off its branded clothing business as HanesBrands Inc., and they've been doing their own thing ever since.

What's kind of fascinating is how they've stayed relevant for over 120 years. They make comfort for the whole family - everything from t-shirts and sweatpants to socks, bras and underwear. And they're not just sitting around either. During the coronavirus pandemic, Hanes actually retrofitted their factory to manufacture N95 masks for healthcare workers - talk about pivoting when it matters.

The numbers are pretty impressive too. Hanes produces 82 million meters of fabric a year at their plants in El Salvador, making up 20% of the country's textile exports and 9.8% of El Salvador's total exports. That's not small potatoes.

But here's what really gets me - they're not just about the bottom line. In 2021, HBI was one of two apparel manufacturers named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere and earned a spot on Barron's 100 Most Sustainable Companies for the third consecutive year. They're actually trying to make things better.

Recently, they announced they're moving their global headquarters from their longtime Oak Summit location to downtown Winston-Salem in early 2025 - staying true to their roots while modernizing their operations.

So yeah, Hanes isn't just about underwear and t-shirts anymore. They're this massive operation that somehow still feels like that reliable brand your mom bought for you growing up.
