Editor's Take

So here's the thing about maternity wear-it's historically been kind of terrible. Like, you're already dealing with swollen feet and weird cravings, and then you're supposed to squeeze into some shapeless tent dress that screams "I've given up"? That's exactly what frustrated Ariane Goldman back in 2011 when she was pregnant and couldn't find anything that made her feel like herself.

HATCH Collection basically said "enough of that" and created something different. The whole concept is pretty simple but revolutionary: clothes that work before, during, and after pregnancy. Not disposable maternity wear you'll toss in six months, but actual pieces you'd want to keep wearing. And here's the kicker-about 20% of their customers aren't even pregnant. They're just women who like well-designed, comfortable clothing that happens to have some extra room where it counts.

The brand started online but now has physical stores in New York (two locations-one in Soho at 17 Bleecker Street and another on the Upper East Side at 1027 Lexington Avenue) plus a spot in Santa Monica's Brentwood neighborhood. Walk into any of these stores and you'll find what they call a "Cravings Bar" stocked with pickles, candy, and ice cream. Because if you're gonna sell maternity clothes, you might as well lean into it, right?

But HATCH isn't just about the clothes anymore. They've expanded into beauty products-specifically non-toxic, pregnancy-safe skincare stuff under the HATCH Mama line. Everything from belly oil to nursing essentials. The company got acquired by Go Global Retail back in October of that year, which also owns brands like Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod, creating this massive maternity retail empire.

What makes them stand out is this attention to detail that feels rare in the maternity space. They've got this "Bump Slider" feature on their website where you can see how a piece will fit during pregnancy versus after. Their sizing runs 0 through 4 (with some exceptions), and everything's designed with room to grow. The aesthetic is clean, modern, feminine-think slip dresses, denim that doesn't look like maternity jeans, nursing-friendly button-downs, cozy knitwear.

The stores themselves host community events too. Not just "come buy stuff" events, but actual programming about nutrition during pregnancy, postpartum prep, baby sleep-the kind of information new moms are desperately Googling at 2 AM. It's this whole ecosystem approach to motherhood that goes beyond just selling clothes.

Price-wise? It's definitely premium. This isn't Target maternity section pricing. But the philosophy is that you're investing in pieces that'll last through multiple stages rather than buying cheap stuff you'll replace constantly. Whether that math works out depends on your budget and how you feel about spending $200+ on maternity jeans.

The brand's gotten a cult following among celebrities and regular folks alike, probably because it fills a genuine gap in the market. Pregnancy doesn't mean you stop caring about style, and HATCH gets that in a way most maternity brands historically haven't. They're not trying to hide the bump or make you look "normal"-they're designing for the body you have right now, whatever stage that is.
