So here's the thing about Henig Furs-it's basically the kind of family business that makes you believe those "five generations" stories actually mean something. Started in 1920 when Max Henig brought his Romanian fur-making skills to New York City, the company took an unexpected turn south during World War II. John Henig Sr. met an Alabama girl while stationed at Fort Benning, and rather than drag her north, he brought the whole fur operation to Montgomery. Smart move, honestly.
And it worked. Like, really worked. Today they've got close to 20 locations scattered across the Southeast, plus a solid online presence that's been going since 1999. Their 32,000 square foot headquarters in Montgomery houses the main showroom and vault-which is kind of impressive when you think about it.
But here's what's interesting: they're not just sitting on tradition. The current president, Michael Henig Jr., represents that fifth generation, and they've adapted the business beyond just luxury furs. They've expanded into casual furs, leather, cashmere and outerwear for everyone-juniors, misses, men, even children. Notice how they read the room? Furs aren't just for fancy occasions anymore.
The selection is legitimately extensive. From fashionable mink, beaver and fox, to the finest Canadian lynx, chinchilla and Russian sable furs-basically if it's a fur type, they probably have it. They also do custom work, which makes sense given they actually have master furriers and finishers in-house. Not many American fur companies can say that anymore.
