Editor's Take

Herman Miller isn't just another furniture company-it's basically the Apple of office chairs, and honestly, that comparison isn't even close to doing it justice. Founded way back in 1905, this Michigan-based powerhouse has been quietly revolutionizing how we sit, work, and live for over a century.

You've probably seen their stuff without even realizing it. That iconic Aeron chair that costs more than some people's rent? That's Herman Miller. The Eames Lounge Chair that shows up in every fancy office and design magazine? Yep, Herman Miller too. They're the company that literally invented the office cubicle back in 1968-though whether that's something to brag about is debatable.

But here's what's really wild about Herman Miller: they don't just make furniture, they make statements. When Charles and Ray Eames were experimenting with molded plywood in the 1940s, Herman Miller was right there backing them up. When ergonomics became a thing, they didn't just jump on the bandwagon-they basically built the wagon. Their research division has been studying how people actually use furniture since the 1960s, which explains why sitting in one of their chairs feels like it was custom-made for your body.

The company's gone through some major changes recently. In 2021, they acquired Knoll for $1.8 billion and rebranded the whole operation as MillerKnoll. So now they're not just Herman Miller-they're this massive collective of design brands that includes everything from HAY's Scandinavian minimalism to Design Within Reach's accessible modernism.

And they're not stuck in the past, either. Herman Miller Gaming is a real thing now, partnering with Logitech to create chairs specifically for esports pros and serious gamers. Because apparently, even professional video game players need proper lumbar support.

What really sets Herman Miller apart is their obsession with sustainability and social responsibility. They've been carbon neutral since 2018, they offer employees stock ownership, and they actually seem to care about making the world a better place through design. Sure, their chairs cost a fortune, but when you're buying something that's built to last decades and comes with a 12-year warranty, it starts to make sense.
