Editor's Take

You know that feeling when you stumble across something that's been around forever but somehow still feels fresh? That's Hobie. Started back in 1950 by a guy named Hobart Alter who just wanted to make surfboards in his parents' garage, this company has basically spent 75 years figuring out how to make water more fun.

And here's the thing-they didn't just stick with surfboards. Hobie's the kind of company that sees a problem and goes, "Yeah, we can fix that." In the late '60s, they looked at sailing and thought, "What if we made this accessible to regular people?" So they created the Hobie Cat, a lightweight catamaran that revolutionized recreational sailing. More people have sailed on a Hobie Cat than almost any other sailboat design. That's not marketing speak-it's just what happened when you make something that actually works.

But the real game-changer came in 1997 with the MirageDrive. Picture this: you're kayaking, and instead of paddling with your arms (which, let's be honest, gets old fast), you're pedaling with your legs like you're on a bike. Hands-free. Your arms are free to fish, take photos, or just relax. It sounds simple, but it completely changed kayak fishing. Suddenly, you could cover more water, stay out longer, and actually enjoy yourself without feeling like you just did a CrossFit workout.

Today, Hobie makes everything from those iconic catamarans to fishing kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and inflatable boats. They're based in Oceanside, California, but their stuff is everywhere-dealers across the US and in over 40 countries. The company's still innovating too, with new pedal drive technology, electric propulsion systems, and designs that keep pushing what's possible on the water.

What's kind of remarkable is how they've maintained this reputation for quality. Talk to anyone who owns a Hobie, and they'll tell you these things last. The kayaks are built tough, the catamarans can take a beating, and the company actually stands behind their products. They've got a whole network of dealers who know the gear inside and out, so you're not just buying something online and hoping for the best.

The product lineup is pretty extensive. On the kayak side, you've got everything from the Pro Angler series (serious fishing machines with all the bells and whistles) to more recreational models for people who just want to get out on the water. The MirageDrive comes in different versions now-the 180 lets you go forward and backward, the 360 gives you complete maneuverability, and there's even a version with Glide Technology for their inflatable kayaks.

For sailing, they still make the classic Hobie 16 (the boat that started it all), plus the Wave, Getaway, and some wild trimaran designs like the Mirage Island that you can sail, pedal, or paddle. It's like they looked at every way you might want to move across water and said, "Let's make that possible."

The company's also branched into lifestyle stuff-polarized sunglasses, apparel, even e-bikes. But it all comes back to that original mission from Hobie Alter: making toys that get people outside having fun. No hard-soled shoes required, as he used to say.
