Editor's Take
Here's the thing about Homesick-they've basically cracked the code on nostalgia marketing, and honestly? It's kind of brilliant. Founded in 2016 by friends living in NYC who were all from somewhere else and missing home, they started hand-pouring candles in their kitchen as a hobby. Fast forward to today, and they offer almost 200 different products representing all the things that matter most - from every US state, to multiple cities and countries, to occasions, people and moments.
What sets them apart isn't just the concept-it's the process. They speak to anywhere from 30 to 100 people for every candle they develop, visiting local areas, collecting samples, and even extracting scents from food. They've discussed childhood memories with local Texans, why books smell so great with veteran librarians, the flora of Central Park with New York horticulturalists, and the finer points of donuts with Dunkin' superfans. That's some serious commitment to authenticity.
The candles themselves are 13.75oz with a burn time of 60-80 hours, made with a natural soy wax blend in small batches, and they're cruelty-free, non-toxic and contain no lead, plastics, paraben, phthalates or synthetic dyes. But here's where it gets interesting-they've expanded way beyond just state candles. You can get Harry Potter house candles, Star Wars planet candles, and they've done collaborations with Dunkin' for seasonal beverages and Budweiser for a Backyard BBQ candle.
The pricing sits around $34-44 for most candles, which puts them in premium territory. And while their Instagram has 129K followers and they're active on TikTok, the customer service reviews are... mixed. Some customers report slow email responses and dismissive service, though others have had positive experiences.
What's fascinating is how they've turned scent into storytelling. Whether it's NYC with notes of bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, jasmine, concrete, water lilies, oakmoss, sandalwood, and musk or Book Club with orange, nutmeg, cinnamon, sandalwood, vanilla, balsam, and amber, each candle is designed to transport you somewhere specific. It's emotional commerce at its finest-you're not just buying a candle, you're buying a memory.
