Editor's Take
There's something kind of perfect about a company that's been making boots since 1856. Hunter Boots isn't just another footwear brand-it's basically a piece of British history that you can wear on your feet. And honestly, that heritage shows.
The Original Wellington Boot, first crafted in 1956, is still handmade from 28 separate parts. That's not marketing speak-each pair really does go through this meticulous process using natural rubber and techniques that haven't changed much in decades. It's the kind of craftsmanship that makes you understand why people hold onto their Hunters for years, even decades.
But here's what's interesting. While Hunter started as the go-to boot for British aristocracy (they've got Royal Warrants from both Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh), they've managed to stay relevant without losing their soul. You'll see them at Glastonbury on festival-goers splashing through mud, on city streets during rainy commutes, and yes, still on country estates. That's pretty rare-a brand that can span from landed gentry to urban millennials without feeling forced.
The company's evolved beyond just the iconic green Wellington, too. They've expanded into sneakers, clogs, sandals, and a whole range of weather-resistant outerwear. The PLAY collection offers lighter, more packable options. There's technical gear for serious outdoor enthusiasts. And they've done collaborations with brands like LoveShackFancy that bring fresh energy while respecting the heritage.
What strikes me most is how Hunter has navigated the tricky balance between tradition and innovation. They're not trying to be something they're not, but they're also not stuck in the past. The boots are still made to last-properly waterproof, durable, functional-but now they come in dozens of colors and styles. You can get tall boots, short boots, Chelsea boots, even insulated versions for snow.
The brand's had its ups and downs financially (like many heritage companies), but Authentic Brands Group acquired them in 2023, and they seem to be on solid footing now. They're expanding globally, opening stores in Singapore, partnering with retailers across Asia and Europe, and maintaining that festival presence that's become part of their identity.
So yeah, Hunter Boots has staying power. Not because they're chasing trends, but because they figured out how to make something genuinely useful, genuinely well-made, and genuinely stylish-all at once. In a world of fast fashion and disposable everything, that's worth something.
