Hurley isn't just another surf brand-it's basically the embodiment of California beach culture wrapped up in boardshorts and wetsuits. Founded back in 1979 by Bob Hurley when he was just 24, this company has had quite the journey. And honestly? It's kind of fascinating how they've managed to stay relevant through all the ownership changes.
Nike owned them from 2002 to 2019, which gave them serious corporate backing and distribution power. But then Nike sold them to Bluestar Alliance in 2019, and you'd think that might slow them down. Instead, they've kept pushing forward with that same "Born from Water" mentality that's been their thing since day one.
What's really cool about Hurley is how they've managed to stay authentic to surf culture while expanding way beyond just boardshorts. They're doing everything from clothing and swimsuits to wetsuits, flip-flops, bags, and backpacks. It's like they figured out how to bottle that laid-back beach vibe and put it into whatever you need for your active lifestyle.
Their Instagram game is strong too-2 million followers who are clearly here for the surf content and beach lifestyle inspiration. The brand was actually re-founded in Huntington Beach in 1999 with this whole mission about "empowering and fueling the voice of the next generation." And you can see that philosophy in how they partner with musicians, surfers, and skateboarders-it's not just about selling clothes, it's about supporting a whole culture.
The business side is pretty impressive too. They're pulling in around $108 million in sales with about 201 employees, which shows they've found that sweet spot between staying true to their roots and actually making money. With 37 retail locations across the country, they've got the physical presence to back up their online game.
What I find most interesting is how they've maintained that authentic surf brand feel even through all the corporate changes. They're still "more than just a surf brand-it's an embodiment of the action sports and beach lifestyle," and their stuff is genuinely "crafted for those who demand both style and performance." That's not easy to pull off when you're dealing with corporate ownership and mass retail distribution.
