Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Illinois-most people think Chicago, deep-dish pizza, maybe Lincoln's hometown, and that's about it. But Illinois is basically this massive, underrated playground sitting right in the middle of America (they literally call it "The Middle of Everything"), and once you start digging into what's actually here, you realize it's kind of genius.

The tourism industry welcomes more than 67 million visitors per year, who spend $23 billion in visitor expenditures annually. That's not small potatoes. And those 67 million people aren't just showing up for the Bean and calling it a day.

The state's basically four completely different personalities rolled into one. You've got Chicago & Beyond up north-world-class museums, that iconic skyline, neighborhoods that feel like their own little countries. Then there's the Land of Lincoln in central Illinois, where you can walk through actual Abraham Lincoln sites and cruise down Route 66 past roadside Americana that'll make you feel like you time-traveled. Head west and you hit Great Rivers Country, where the Mississippi River creates these gorgeous limestone bluffs and charming river towns. And down south? Trails to Adventure, featuring Shawnee National Forest with hiking that rivals anything you'd find out west.

They partner with 37 certified Convention and Visitor Bureaus (CVBs) throughout the state to make sure every corner gets its moment. Notice how they're not just pushing Chicago? The Illinois Office of Tourism actually puts serious effort into promoting the whole state-the wineries, the state parks, the festivals, the Illinois Made program that highlights local craftspeople and products.

And here's what's actually smart: Illinois has over 1,200 public electric vehicle charging stations throughout the state, so they're making it stupid easy to road trip here sustainably. The Great River Road runs the entire western border. Route 66 cuts right through. You could spend weeks just driving scenic byways.

The tourism office runs this whole "Middle of Everything" campaign, and honestly? It works. Because Illinois really is in the middle-geographically, culturally, all of it. You want big city energy? Got it. Small-town charm? Everywhere. Outdoor adventures? Whether you're looking for ziplining, golfing, hiking, biking, rock climbing, horseback riding or kayaking, you can find it here in Southern Illinois. History buffs, foodies, festival-goers-there's something for basically everyone.

Bottom line: Illinois is that friend who's way cooler than you initially thought. You show up expecting one thing, and then you're suddenly exploring underground caves, tasting wine in a vineyard you didn't know existed, or watching the sunset over the Mississippi from some bluff town you can't even pronounce. It's the middle of everything, and that's exactly the point.
