Editor's Take
So here's the thing about maternity wear-it's kind of always been this weird category where you're expected to buy a whole new wardrobe for like, nine months, and then what? That's exactly what bugged Ingrid Carney back in 2001 when she was standing in her closet, staring at jeans that wouldn't button. Out of pure desperation (and probably some pregnancy brain genius), she grabbed a tube top, pulled it over her unbuttoned pants, and boom-the Bellaband was born.
Fast forward two decades, and Ingrid & Isabel has become the largest maternity retail group in the U.S. They've got their premium line, plus Isabel Maternity exclusively at Target, which means they're basically everywhere. But what's actually interesting is their whole philosophy. They're not trying to sell you throwaway pregnancy clothes. The focus is on pieces that work before, during, and after pregnancy-stuff you'll actually want to keep wearing.
The Bellaband itself has sold millions of units. Millions. That's a lot of women who got to stay in their regular jeans a bit longer instead of dropping cash on maternity denim they'd wear for a few months. And they've expanded way beyond that original product-dresses, leggings, nursing tops, postpartum essentials. They even have this "Cool Mom" collection with cooling fabric technology, which honestly sounds like a lifesaver for anyone who's been pregnant in summer.
What sets them apart is this sustainability angle they're pushing. They've got a resale marketplace called Bump Swap where you can sell your used Ingrid & Isabel pieces directly on their site. You get an estimated resale value right when you buy something new. It's basically built-in circular fashion, which is pretty forward-thinking for a maternity brand.
The company's independently owned and mom-founded, which you can kind of feel in how they operate. They accept HSA/FSA cards (because yes, maternity support items qualify). They work with Every Mother Counts on maternal health initiatives. And their fit testing process involves both pregnant and non-pregnant women, so the clothes actually work across different body stages.
Notice how they're not precious about the "maternity" label? A lot of their customers aren't even pregnant-they just want comfortable, well-designed clothes that happen to have thoughtful features like extra stretch or nursing access. That's kind of the sweet spot they've found. Not just maternity wear, but clothes that adapt to your life, whatever stage you're in.
