Editor's Take

Here's the thing about maternity wear-most of it feels like an afterthought. Like someone just took regular clothes and added elastic panels without much consideration for, you know, actually looking good. But Isabella Oliver? They've been doing this differently since 2003, and honestly, it shows.

This London-based brand focuses on effortless and sustainable designs that you can wear throughout your pregnancy and beyond. And that "beyond" part matters more than you'd think. Because pregnancy is temporary, but dropping serious money on clothes that only work for nine months feels wasteful. Isabella Oliver gets that.

They've dressed over one million pregnant women around the world-that's not nothing. Founded by wife-and-husband team Baukjen de Swaan Arons and Geoff van Sonsbeeck, the brand started because they couldn't find maternity clothes they actually wanted to wear. So they made their own. Classic entrepreneurial origin story, but it worked.

What sets them apart is the sustainability angle. They're a Certified B Corp and carbon negative across both brands, producing consciously with low-impact fabrics, ethical practices, and a circular approach to fashion. They've even won a UN Global Climate Action Award. In an industry notorious for waste and questionable labor practices, that's genuinely impressive.

Over 90% of their collection is produced within Europe, which cuts down on shipping emissions. They use eco-friendly materials like Lenzing Ecovero viscose, organic cotton, and mulesing-free wool. And they're not just talking the talk-they've eliminated plastic packaging and introduced rental and pre-loved collections. You can literally rent maternity clothes for a two-week period or buy secondhand pieces, with 50% of pre-loved proceeds going to Oxfam.

The subscription model is kind of brilliant too. You pick a bundle of garments, wear them throughout your pregnancy, swap items monthly as your body changes or the seasons shift, and return everything when you're done. They even handle the washing. It's the kind of circular economy approach that makes sense for clothes you'll only need temporarily.

Now, let's be real-this isn't budget maternity wear. A basic set of leggings and a top can run nearly $120. But the quality is there. Customers consistently praise the fit, the fabrics, and how the clothes actually flatter a changing body. The returns window is 21 days from when you receive your item (14 days for sale, outlet, and pre-loved items), which gives you time to figure out what works.

The brand operates entirely online, so you won't find a physical Isabella Oliver store. But they're stocked at retailers like John Lewis and ASOS if you want to see pieces in person. Customer service seems solid-they're available Monday to Friday via email or phone, and reviews mention responsive, helpful staff.

One interesting detail: They've introduced rental and pre-loved collections alongside their main line, which shows they're thinking about the full lifecycle of their garments. Not many brands actively encourage you to buy less from them.

So if you're pregnant and tired of shapeless tents or clothes that scream "maternity," Isabella Oliver might be worth the investment. Especially if sustainability matters to you. The prices are higher, but you're getting thoughtfully designed pieces from a company that's actually trying to do better-for people, for workers, and for the planet.
