Editor's Take
So here's the thing about JLM Couture-it's kind of the LVMH of the bridal world, except with way more drama attached to its name lately. Founded by designer Joseph L. Murphy Jr. in 1981, this New York-based design house has spent over 40 years building what became a multi-label bridal empire. And when I say multi-label, I mean they've got Lazaro (think: dramatic ball gowns with serious sparkle), Allison Webb, Tara Keely, and several others under one roof.
The business model is actually pretty clever. Instead of putting all their eggs in one basket, JLM operates as a multi-label bridal house engaged in the design, manufacture, and distribution of bridal gowns and bridesmaids dresses, with collections including Alvina Valenta, Hayley Paige, Blush by Hayley Paige, Jim Hjelm, Lazaro, Tara Keely, Ti Adora, and Allison Webb. Each designer brings their own aesthetic-from romantic and whimsical to sleek and modern-which means they're basically covering every type of bride imaginable.
But let's talk about what really put JLM in the headlines. The company got tangled up in a massive legal battle with designer Hayley Paige Gutman that became this cautionary tale about contracts and social media ownership. Without getting too deep into it, the dispute centered on who owned her Instagram account (which had over a million followers) and whether she could even use her own name professionally. After years of tangling in court and via social media, the bridal designer Hayley Paige Gutman and JLM Couture agreed to a settlement where Gutman agreed to pay JLM $263,000 and the New York based multi-brand bridal company gave the designer the rights to the "Hayley Paige" name and social media accounts. That settlement came in 2024, finally closing a chapter that started back in 2020.
The company does have one physical retail location-their flagship boutique in West Hollywood at 352 North Robertson Boulevard. But mostly, they operate as a wholesale manufacturer, selling to specialty bridal shops across the United States and Europe. So when you try on a Lazaro gown at your local bridal salon, you're experiencing JLM Couture's work, even if their name isn't on the door.
What's kind of fascinating is how they've managed to keep multiple designer brands feeling distinct while operating under one corporate umbrella. It's the same strategy luxury conglomerates use, just applied to wedding dresses. Each collection maintains its own identity and price point, which lets them capture different segments of the bridal market without cannibalizing their own sales.
