Editor's Take

Johnny Was isn't just another boho brand-it's basically the California dream wrapped in silk and embroidery. This international women's lifestyle brand, based in sunny Southern California, is known for their chic boho clothing, signature prints, vintage-inspired style, and high-quality resort and swimwear, making them the ultimate destination for anyone who's ever wanted to look effortlessly put-together while feeling like they just rolled out of a beach hammock.

What sets Johnny Was apart is their commitment to craftsmanship. From their gorgeous dresses and eveningwear to their one-of-a-kind kimonos they're known for their artisan-inspired techniques and ultra-luxurious silhouettes. And honestly? The attention to detail shows. Sewing and embroidery is done in Shanghai, and cashmere and other knits come from Peru while leather handbags and shoes are made in Italy-they're not messing around with quality.

The brand's story is pretty cool too. The soundtrack to this period was Bob Marley's infectious "Johnny Was a Good Man," the inspiration behind the brand's name. Established in 1987, Johnny Was designs for confident and free spirited women who are looking for contemporary style. That bohemian spirit isn't just marketing speak-it's woven into everything they do.

But here's where it gets interesting: The product prices range from $58 to $2,600, which explains why the target customers' age skews "a little bit older because the 20-something isn't going to spend the kind of money it costs to have Johnny Was." They're working on broadening that appeal though, trying to make the brand accessible to more people without losing that luxury feel.

With over 100 Johnny Was locations including signature stores, they've grown way beyond their first store that opened at Los Angeles's Santa Monica Place in 2010. These days, the brand has more than 300 employees working at 57 company-owned stores and at a downtown warehousing and fulfillment facility. That's some serious expansion for a brand that started with one guy and a Bob Marley song.

The whole vibe is very "California bohemian lifestyle meets luxury fashion." The label's aesthetic is based on the idea of the modern bohemian, which explores the meeting point between vintage style and contemporary design, the traditional and the innovative. The brand uses both classic and forward thinking techniques to produce looks that feel individual and unrestrained. It's that sweet spot between looking like you tried and looking like you didn't-which, let's be honest, is exactly what most of us are going for.
