Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Karen Kane-it's one of those brands that's been quietly doing everything right for over 40 years, and somehow it still feels fresh. Started in 1979 out of a Studio City garage by Karen and her husband Lonnie, the company has grown into this family-run powerhouse that's basically the antithesis of fast fashion. And I mean that in the best way possible.

What makes Karen Kane different? Well, for starters, they're a Certified B Corporation, which means they've met rigorous standards for social and environmental performance. But this isn't some recent pivot to capitalize on sustainability trends-they've been manufacturing most of their collection in Los Angeles since day one. Back in 2012, Karen was literally invited to the White House for Obama's "Insourcing American Jobs" summit. That's not just talk; that's walking the walk.

The aesthetic is pure California-relaxed, effortless, that kind of boho-chic vibe that works whether you're grabbing coffee or heading to a work meeting. Think flowy dresses, comfortable tops with interesting details, and pieces that somehow manage to be both trendy and timeless. Celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel, and Jessica Alba have been spotted wearing the brand, which tells you something about its versatility.

Here's what really gets me: Karen Kane was offering extended sizing (XS to 3XL plus petites) way before it became an industry standard. They launched their plus-size division years ago, and it's not some afterthought-it's fully integrated into their main collection. That's the kind of forward-thinking that comes from actually caring about your customers.

The family aspect is real, too. Both of Karen and Lonnie's sons, Michael and Robert, now work in the business. Michael serves as co-president, and they even created a line called Robert Michaels (named after both sons) that's sold exclusively at Bloomingdale's. It's sold in over 550 specialty boutiques across the country, plus major department stores like Nordstrom, Dillard's, and Belk.

And get this-when the pandemic hit in 2020, they pivoted their factory to make masks for healthcare workers. Not as a PR stunt, but because that's just how they operate. The company employs around 200 people, and by all accounts, they treat their employees well, offering profit-sharing plans and a genuinely supportive work environment.

The quality is legit. Their jersey knits are substantial and silky, with that perfect drape that makes everything look more expensive than it is. Prices are reasonable for the quality you're getting-definitely not bargain-basement, but not luxury-tier either. It's that sweet spot where you feel good about the purchase.

If you're looking for clothing that's ethically made, comfortable, stylish, and built to last more than one season, Karen Kane delivers. It's the kind of brand you discover, fall in love with, and then wonder why you didn't find it sooner.
