Editor's Take

Here's the thing about Kiyonna that most people don't realize-this isn't some johnny-come-lately brand trying to cash in on the plus-size market. Founded in 1996 by Kim Camarella-Khanbeigi, the company basically saw the future of online fashion retail before anyone else did. And the origin story? It's actually kind of perfect. Kim was on vacation with a friend who wore clothes without labels because her mom had to make everything-cute stuff just didn't exist past size 16 back then. That lightbulb moment turned into nearly three decades of making women sizes 10-32 actually feel good about getting dressed.

What sets Kiyonna apart is this: all clothing is made in the USA. Not "designed in California, made wherever." Actually manufactured in Orange County. In 2025, that's basically unheard of in the fashion world, especially at their price points. They're not just slapping their label on mass-produced imports.

The company operates primarily online, but here's where it gets interesting-they have an onsite Showroom in Anaheim, California where you can actually try stuff on. It's appointment-friendly, open Monday through Friday, and according to reviews, feels more like a high-end bridal boutique than your typical retail space. That matters when you're dropping $100-$200 on a dress and want to make sure the fit is right.

Their specialty is dresses-cocktail dresses, evening gowns, wedding attire, that sort of thing. The kind of clothes you need when life hands you a fancy event and department stores are giving you nothing but shrugs. Kiyonna specializes in trendy plus size women's clothing in sizes 10-32, which translates to 0X-5X in their sizing. They've also expanded into separates, tops, and even swimwear, but dresses remain their bread and butter.

The business model is smart. They sell direct through their website, but you'll also find Kiyonna in specialty boutiques across the country and even internationally. They've partnered with places like Nordstrom and various bridal shops, which gives them broader reach without diluting the brand. And they're not trying to be everything to everyone-they know their customer, they know what she needs, and they deliver on that consistently.

One thing that comes up again and again in customer feedback: the quality is there. These aren't fast-fashion pieces that fall apart after two wears. The lace dresses, in particular, have developed something of a cult following. Melissa McCarthy wore one on the Tonight Show back in 2010, which tells you something about their appeal beyond just the plus-size market.

The company's also done some genuinely cool philanthropic work, partnering with organizations like Sandy Hook Promise and supporting breast cancer awareness initiatives. It's not just performative-they've been at this for years, weaving community support into their business model in ways that feel authentic rather than marketing-driven.

Kiyonna carved out a niche in 1996 and has been refining it ever since. They're not trying to compete with fast fashion or be the cheapest option. They're the place you go when you need something special that actually fits, and you're willing to pay for quality and craftsmanship. After 29 years, they're still family-owned, still making clothes in California, and still focused on making curvy women look and feel amazing. That kind of consistency is rare.
