Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Koio-it's basically what happens when two Wharton MBAs get annoyed at a $1,000 pair of sneakers in a New York boutique and decide they can do better. Chris Wichert and Johannes Quodt founded the brand in 2014 after realizing how overpriced high-end footwear could be, setting out to create something better by partnering directly with artisans in Italy. And honestly? They kind of nailed it.

The whole operation is refreshingly straightforward. They visited 34 factories in Italy before partnering with an esteemed manufacturer in Florence, where shoes are masterfully handcrafted using locally sourced leathers, suedes, and recycled materials, with every pair passing through the hands of 42 craftspeople. That's not marketing fluff-that's actually how they make them. Each sneaker goes through 42 different artisans before it's done, which explains why they feel so ridiculously well-made.

But what really sets Koio apart is their direct-to-consumer model. They sell directly to customers to offer premium Italian-made sneakers at a more accessible price by eliminating retail markups, maintaining full control over design, quality, and customer experience. You're getting Italian craftsmanship-the real deal, made in Florence-without the luxury markup that comes from selling through department stores. Their bestseller, the Capri, typically runs around $248-$298, which is basically half what you'd pay for Common Projects.

And people notice. Koio maintains a highly positive reputation with an average score of 4.6/5 on Trustpilot from 190 reviews, with customers frequently praising the brand's blend of Italian craftsmanship, premium materials, and minimalist design. The reviews consistently mention two things: the comfort (thanks to OrthoLite insoles and soft Italian leather) and how they somehow work with everything from jeans to suits.

The sustainability angle is legit too. Most styles are crafted from LWG certified Italian leather using calf leather, suede, and nubuck, with soles like the Cassetta made from 50 percent FSC certified natural rubber, 40 percent recycled rubber, and 10 percent conventional rubber. They're not just slapping "eco-friendly" on the label and calling it a day.

If you're in New York, you can actually try them on at their SoHo flagship at 199 Lafayette Street. Otherwise, they ship worldwide with a pretty reasonable return policy. The brand's grown steadily since 2014, raising about $16.77 million in funding, but they've stayed focused on that original mission: making really good sneakers that don't cost a mortgage payment.
