Editor's Take

Here's the thing about Kurgo-they basically started because a dog named Zelda wouldn't stop jumping into the front seat during car rides. And honestly? That's kind of perfect. Founded by brothers Gordie and Kitter Spater in 2003, this company gets that your dog isn't just a pet. They're your adventure buddy, your brewery wingman, your ride-or-die companion who deserves gear that actually works.

What makes Kurgo different is they're not just designing products in some sterile lab. These folks are out there testing everything with their own dogs-like, actually using the gear on trails and road trips and everyday adventures. They proudly back their products with a lifetime warranty, which tells you something about how confident they are in what they make.

The product line has grown way beyond that original Backseat Barrier. Now they're making crash-tested harnesses (seriously, crash-tested), car seat covers, dog backpacks, life jackets, and pretty much everything you need to take your pup anywhere. In 2020, their Tru-Fit Smart Harness Quick Release was voted the Best Dog Harness by Wirecutter, so they're clearly doing something right.

But here's what really stands out-Kurgo has this program called Safe Again where they'll replace any brand of dog harness for free if your dog was in a car accident. Not just their harnesses. Any harness. That's the kind of thing that makes you realize they actually care about dog safety beyond just making a sale.

The brand maintains offices in both Knoxville, Tennessee and Amesbury, Massachusetts, and they've been acquired by Radio Systems Corporation, though they still operate with that small-company feel. Their mission is simple: help dogs and their people go together. Whether you're hitting mountain trails or just heading to the farmer's market, they want to make it easier and safer.

The gear itself is designed to be tough but functional-no unnecessary bells and whistles, just stuff that works. And with products available everywhere from PetSmart to independent pet stores across the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, they've clearly struck a chord with dog owners who want quality gear that lasts.
