Editor's Take
So here's the thing about La Ligne-it's basically what happens when three fashion industry veterans decide the stripe deserves better. And honestly? They might be onto something.
Founded by American Vogue staffers Meredith Melling and Valerie Macaulay, along with former Head of Business Development at rag & bone Molly Howard, this isn't some flash-in-the-pan Instagram brand. These women collectively have over 30 years of fashion experience, and you can tell. The whole concept sounds almost too simple-take the classic stripe and give it "a few new (and unexpected) ways to wear it." But that simplicity is kind of the point.
What makes La Ligne interesting is how they've positioned themselves in that sweet spot between everyday basics and investment pieces. Their tagline is literally "Clothes you can eat, drink, dance and sleep in"-which, let's be real, is exactly what we all want from our wardrobes these days. No one has time for clothes that require a specific posture or can't handle a glass of wine.
The brand launched in 2016, and they've been steadily expanding ever since. They now have eight physical stores across the country-New York, Dallas, Palm Beach, Greenwich, Marin (that's in California), Boston, Charleston, and Nashville. That's a pretty impressive retail footprint for a brand that's not even a decade old. Their first store opened on Madison Avenue in 2019, and Dallas was their second location, which tells you something about where they see their customer base.
But here's what's actually clever about their approach: they're not trying to reinvent fashion. They believe in "the universal appeal of the stripe-always classic, forever chic." It's that French-girl-effortless thing, but made accessible. You know those brands where you feel like you need a stylist to figure out how to wear anything? La Ligne isn't that. The stripe acts as a guide-it looks good pretty much any way you wear it.
And they've clearly thought about the business model beyond just selling clothes online. The physical stores matter here. Notice how they picked places like Highland Park Village in Dallas and Palm Beach-these aren't random mall locations. They're curated shopping destinations where their target customer is already spending time. Smart.
The pricing sits in that contemporary range-not fast fashion, but not completely out of reach either. Their Marin sweater (which seems to be their hero piece) runs around $250, which is steep for a sweater but reasonable for something you'll wear constantly. That's the bet they're making: quality over quantity, classics over trends.
One more thing worth mentioning: they've launched Re-Ligne, a peer-to-peer marketplace for buying and selling pre-loved La Ligne items. That's forward-thinking in 2025, when everyone's at least pretending to care about sustainability. It also suggests they're confident their pieces have staying power-both in style and construction.
