Editor's Take
You know what's funny about La-Z-Boy? Everyone thinks they know exactly what it is-that classic recliner your dad claimed as his throne-but the company's actually been quietly revolutionizing comfort for nearly a century now. Founded in 1927 when cousins Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker invented the iconic recliner in Monroe, Michigan, they've grown into something much bigger than just "that chair company."
And here's where it gets interesting. La-Z-Boy now operates nearly 210 company-owned stores within a network of 370 La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries nationwide, plus they've got Joybird with 14 modern furniture stores for the younger crowd who want that mid-century aesthetic. They're not just selling recliners anymore-we're talking full room solutions, from reclining sofas and sleep sofas to complete home furnishing lines.
But what really sets them apart is the manufacturing side. La-Z-Boy holds US and international patents on more than 200 different styles and mechanisms-that's serious innovation happening behind the scenes. They're basically the Apple of furniture comfort, constantly tweaking and perfecting how we sit and relax.
The numbers tell the story too. With trailing 12-month revenue of $2.11 billion and employing more than 11,000 people, this isn't some small-town furniture shop anymore. They've managed to scale comfort into a global operation while somehow keeping that hometown feel-probably because they're still headquartered in Monroe, Michigan, where it all started.
What's really smart is how they've adapted to changing lifestyles. Sure, the classic recliner is still there, but now they're designing pieces for smaller spaces, work-from-home setups, and that whole "Netflix and chill" culture we've all embraced. They get that comfort isn't just about the chair-it's about creating spaces where life actually happens.
