You know that feeling when you slip into a perfectly broken-in pair of jeans? That's basically Levi Strauss & Co. in a nutshell-comfortable, reliable, and somehow always exactly what you need.
Founded back in 1873 when Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received that famous U.S. patent for "Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings," adding metal rivets to work pants to create stronger pants for working men, this company has been through more reinventions than a pop star's career. But here's the thing-they've managed to stay relevant for over 170 years, which is kind of incredible when you think about it.
With 2024 net revenues hitting $6.4 billion, they're clearly doing something right. And it's not just about those iconic 501s anymore (though let's be honest, those are still pretty great). The company now designs and markets jeans, casual wear and related accessories for men, women and children under the Levi's®, Levi Strauss Signature™ and Beyond Yoga® brands.
What's fascinating is how they've adapted to the digital age. Their digital business now represents more than 15 percent of total revenue, double what it was just three years ago. They were actually one of the first retailers to use TikTok's "Shop Now" buttons, which shows they're not just resting on their denim laurels.
The sustainability angle is pretty compelling too. They're pushing the idea that creating more qualitative products can reduce waste and save precious resources, with content focused on tips and hacks for giving old denim a new spark and look. It's smart positioning-vintage is trendy, and they literally invented the vintage everyone's trying to copy.
Operating in approximately 120 countries with around 3,400 retail stores and shop-in-shops, they've built something that feels both massive and personal. You can walk into a Levi's store in Tokyo or Times Square and somehow it still feels like that same authentic American brand that's been around forever.
