Editor's Take
You know what's fascinating about Life Is Good? Most people think it's just another feel-good t-shirt company, but there's actually this whole incredible backstory that makes you appreciate what they're doing on a completely different level.
So picture this: it's 1994, and these two brothers, Bert and John Jacobs, are basically living in their van, selling t-shirts they designed themselves at college campuses up and down the East Coast. They're eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for every meal, showering whenever they can find a place, and honestly? Sales are pretty terrible. After five years of this nomadic lifestyle, they come back to Boston with just $78 to their names, completely unsure if they should keep going.
But here's where it gets interesting. They had this tradition of gathering friends at their apartment after these road trips, posting drawings and sayings on their living room walls, and asking for feedback. On this particular night, one simple drawing caught everyone's attention-a smiling stick figure wearing a beret with the words "Life is good." That stick figure became Jake, their iconic mascot, and those three words became the foundation of what's now a $100+ million company.
The brothers printed 48 shirts with that design and took them to a street fair in Cambridge. They sold out in under an hour. And that's when they knew they had something special.
What really sets Life Is Good apart isn't just the optimistic messaging-though that's certainly part of it. It's their commitment to actually making a difference. They donate more than 10% of their annual net profits to the Life is Good Playmaker Project, which provides training and resources for early childhood professionals working with vulnerable kids. That's not just marketing speak; that's a genuine commitment to spreading optimism where it's needed most.
Today, they offer over 900 different products sold in approximately 4,500 retail stores across the United States and in 30 countries. From their signature Crusher Tees to hats, accessories, and even home goods, everything carries that same simple message of focusing on the good in life. And honestly? In a world that can feel pretty overwhelming sometimes, that message hits different.
