Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Lifetime - it's basically been redefining what women's entertainment looks like for over 40 years now. And yeah, your mom probably did love it in the '90s (their TikTok bio literally says "your mom loved us in the 90s"), but this isn't your mother's Lifetime anymore.

The channel is part of Lifetime Entertainment Services, a subsidiary of A+E Global Media, which is jointly owned by Hearst Communications and The Walt Disney Company. That's some serious media power backing them up. As of November 2023, Lifetime is available to approximately 63,000,000 pay television households in the United States - down from its peak of 100 million households back in 2011, but still a massive reach.

What makes Lifetime kind of fascinating is how it's evolved. The network was established on February 1, 1984, as the result of a merger of Hearst/ABC's Daytime and Viacom's Cable Health Network. It wasn't an overnight success either - reportedly losing $36 million in its first two years. But they figured it out.

These days, Lifetime's known for a few signature things. There are the made-for-TV movies - you know, the ones with titles that sound like they could be true crime podcasts. Then there's reality programming like Dance Moms and Married at First Sight that have become genuine cultural phenomena. In 2015, Lifetime launched Broad Focus, a major global initiative dedicated to supporting and hiring female directors, writers and producers to make its content which totals over 450 original hours. That's actually pretty significant in an industry that's historically struggled with gender representation behind the camera.

The network's also racked up some serious credentials. As of November 2023, Lifetime has garnered nominations for 63 Emmy Awards, eight Golden Globe Awards and 20 Critics' Choice Movie Awards. Not too shabby for a channel that some people still think of as just "the movie network."

And notice how they've expanded beyond just the main channel? There's LMN (Lifetime Movie Network) for when you need even more movies, plus they've got Lifetime Movie Club as a streaming subscription service. Lifetime operates in over 110 territories globally - so this is way bigger than just a U.S. cable channel at this point.

The programming mix is pretty diverse now too. Sure, there are still those suspenseful original movies, but you'll also find scripted dramas, documentaries about real-life stories, and reality shows covering everything from relationships to true crime. It's become this interesting blend of entertainment that's unapologetically aimed at women but doesn't talk down to its audience.
