Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Lion Brand Yarn-they're basically the granddaddy of American yarn companies, and honestly, that's not just marketing fluff. Founded in 1878, they're literally America's oldest craft yarn company, which means they've been around longer than most of us can even wrap our heads around.
What really gets me is how they've managed to stay relevant in today's craft world. They offer over 8,000 free knitting and crochet patterns-and I mean actually free, not the "free with purchase" nonsense you see elsewhere. That's a pretty massive library when you think about it. Like, you could probably knit for the rest of your life and never run out of new projects to try.
But here's where it gets interesting. They're still a fifth-generation, family-owned business, which is kind of rare these days when everything's getting bought up by massive corporations. And they're not just sitting on their legacy either-they've got a YouTube channel with 800+ videos and nearly 2 million newsletter subscribers. That's some serious digital engagement for a company that started when people were still using horse-drawn carriages.
The social impact stuff is pretty impressive too. Their spokesperson is Vanna White, and through her signature yarn lines, they've donated over $1.9 million to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Plus they partner with organizations like Warm Up America! and Project Linus to provide handmade items to people in need.
What I find fascinating is how they've positioned themselves in the modern crafting world. Crocheters of TikTok increased in popularity, making TikTok's list of favorite communities, and Lion Brand has been right there riding that wave. They get that crafting isn't just about grandmas making doilies anymore-it's become this whole wellness movement, stress-relief thing, and creative outlet for people of all ages.
Their product range is pretty solid too. They have 80+ active yarn families, which basically means there's something for every type of project you can imagine. From basic acrylics to premium fibers, they've got the spectrum covered. And honestly, when you're starting out with knitting or crochet, having a reliable, widely-available brand like Lion Brand makes everything so much easier.
