Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Longchamp-it's one of those brands that somehow manages to be everywhere without feeling overdone. You know the bag I'm talking about. That foldable nylon tote with the leather handles that's been showing up on college campuses, in airport terminals, and tucked under the arms of Parisian women for decades now.

Founded in Paris back in 1948, Longchamp started out making leather-covered pipes. Yeah, pipes. But Jean Cassegrain, the founder, had bigger ideas. By the 1970s, the company was pioneering the use of nylon in luxury bags-basically unheard of at the time when everyone else was lugging around heavy leather suitcases. That innovation led to what would become their most iconic creation: Le Pliage, which literally means "folding" in French. Philippe Cassegrain designed it himself in 1993, and it's been a cult favorite ever since.

What makes Longchamp interesting is that it's still family-owned. The Cassegrain family runs the whole operation across 80 countries and around 1,500 retail outlets. That's kind of rare in luxury fashion these days. And they've managed to hit this sweet spot where the bags feel accessible-Le Pliage totes typically retail between $150 and $200-but still carry that French luxury cachet that Americans can't seem to get enough of.

The brand's had some serious staying power too. Notice how certain bags come and go, but you can walk into any college library or corporate office and spot at least three Longchamps? There's a reason for that. They're lightweight, they fold up when you don't need them, and they come in approximately a million color combinations. Plus, they're way more practical than they have any right to be for something considered a luxury item.

But Longchamp isn't just about that one bag. They've expanded into ready-to-wear, shoes, and a whole range of leather goods. The company's artistic director, Sophie Delafontaine (yes, another Cassegrain family member), has been pushing the brand into more contemporary territory while keeping that effortless Parisian vibe intact. They collaborate with artists, run fashion shows, and generally try to stay relevant without chasing every trend that comes along.

The interesting thing is how Longchamp has become this kind of gateway luxury brand. It's fancy enough that buying one feels like a treat, but not so expensive that you need to take out a loan. And in a market where some handbags cost as much as a used car, that positioning has turned out to be pretty smart. They're benefiting from people questioning whether it's really normal to spend thousands on a bag when you could get something well-made and stylish for a fraction of that.
