Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Loot Crate - it's basically Comic-Con delivered to your doorstep every month, which sounds kind of perfect if you're into that sort of thing. And by "that sort of thing," I mean pop culture, gaming, movies, TV shows, comics, and basically anything that makes your inner geek do a happy dance.
The company bills itself as the #1 pop culture subscription-based service on the planet, delivering 3+ items from your favorite pop culture franchises, including licensed and exclusive collectibles, gear, figures and more. They work closely with creators and licensed partners like Warner Brothers, Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Universal - basically all the big names that make you want to throw your money at them.
What makes Loot Crate interesting is the mystery element. Monthly themes end on the 19th day of each month at 9pm PT, and you never quite know what you're getting until you rip open that box. It's like Christmas, but for people who can quote entire Star Wars scenes from memory. The themes change monthly - one month might be "Animation," another could be "Future" or "Anti-Hero" - keeping things fresh and unpredictable.
The company is run by fans who unabashedly celebrate nostalgic moments and characters, from famous heroes to infamous villains. They know what it's like to track down that "holy grail" collectible or stand in meet-and-greet lines for an autograph. That authenticity shows through in how they curate their boxes.
But let's talk numbers for a second. Loot Crate hit $116 million in revenue and won the No. 1 slot on the 2016 Inc. 500 list of America's fastest-growing private companies, shipping monthly to 650,000 subscribers in 35 countries. That's not nothing. The company went from 220 subscribers in their first month back in 2012 to becoming a cultural phenomenon that basically invented the geek subscription box category.
They approach everything with playfulness and humor, creating multiple layers of discovery for fans. Whether it's shipping a crate that turns into a proton-pack or re-creating a "floating" hoverboard at 1:5 scale, everything they do is intended to bring your fandom into the real world.
