Editor's Take
Here's the thing about Lorna Jane - it's basically the OG of Australian activewear, and there's a reason it's been around since 1989. Started by a dental technician-turned-aerobics instructor who got fed up with the workout clothes available to women in the late '80s, the brand has this whole origin story that feels refreshingly authentic. Lorna Jane Clarkson literally started making her own gear because nothing else cut it, and her students kept asking her to make pieces for them too.
What's kind of fascinating is how the company has stuck to its guns over the years. They've got this "Active Living" philosophy - Move, Nourish, Believe - that sounds a bit new-agey but actually permeates everything they do. And I mean everything. Every single garment has a tiny heart-shaped bead sewn into it somewhere, which is either adorable or extra depending on your perspective. The company even names their garment styles after team members, which creates this weird but kind of sweet connection between the people making the clothes and the final product.
The brand's grown from that first Brisbane store in 1990 to 134 locations across multiple countries, though they've recently pivoted their US operations to online-only. They're particularly known for their proprietary fabrics - "LJ Excel" is their moisture-wicking four-way stretch material, and "Nothing 2 See Here" is their light-blocking fabric that promises maximum coverage. Their Flashdance pants have been bestsellers for over 20 years, which is basically an eternity in fashion terms.
But here's where it gets interesting. Lorna Jane isn't just about selling leggings. The company takes pride in having a 97% female workforce, with over 79% of Senior Leadership roles occupied by women. They've also maintained a relationship with their main production facility for more than 25 years, and they're WRAP Gold Certified for their manufacturing practices. There's this whole sustainability angle too - they've been running a "Swap Shop" program since 2011 where customers can exchange used activewear (any brand) for store credit, and the used clothing goes to the Salvation Army.
The brand's not without controversy, though. In 2020, they got fined $40,000 for promoting activewear that supposedly protected against COVID-19, which was... not great. And they've faced criticism over their size range - they only go up to XL, which falls between Australian sizes 14 and 16, when the average Australian woman is a size 16.
Still, if you're into activewear that's designed specifically for women's bodies, with that buttery-soft feel and thoughtful details like hidden key pockets and adjustable everything, Lorna Jane delivers. Their sports bras are particularly popular - the Amy Maximum Support Sports Bra (formerly the Compress & Compact) is basically legendary in certain circles. And their Lotus collection? People are genuinely obsessed with those leggings.
The company's also embraced this whole "Active Concierge" concept where you can basically get free personal styling sessions via phone or live chat, which is kind of cool if you're overwhelmed by options. They've even launched a preloved marketplace for secondhand items, jumping on the circular fashion trend.
So yeah, Lorna Jane is one of those brands that's managed to stay relevant for over three decades by actually understanding what active women want - functional pieces that don't sacrifice style, made by a company that seems to genuinely care about empowering women. Whether that's worth the premium price point is up to you, but the brand loyalty speaks for itself.
