 | | Dončić’s Dominance | | by Mike Trudell | | | Somehow, Luka Dončić has made averaging 35.0 points per game – not to mention 9.0 assists, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals – to start this 2025-26 season look so routine that it’s not always top of mind. | | | But perhaps it should be?
The five-time All-Star has scored under 30 points only four times this season, which is one fewer time than he’s gone off for at least 40, including his Lakers-high* of 49 against Minnesota on Oct. 24. *His career-high of 73 points is the 4th-most in NBA history.
Furthermore, Dončić’s current average would rank 10th in NBA history, trailing five Wilt Chamberlain seasons, and one apiece from Michael Jordan, James Harden, Rick Barry and Kobe Bryant. Dončić already holds the 20th-best scoring season as well, when he averaged 33.86 per game in 2023-24.
Being on lists with Wilt (30.12) and Jordan (30.07) is nothing new, of course, since they’re the only two players with higher career scoring averages than Luka’s 28.85.
Even a cross-Atlantic flight to his native Slovenia to witness the birth of his second daughter didn’t slow down Dončić’s production, as he posted a 31-point, 15-board, 11-assist triple-double in a Dec. 7 win at Philadelphia just after getting off the plane, and then a 35-point, 8-assist, 5-rebound effort against San Antonio.
Austin Reaves, who’s been on a scoring tear of his own this year especially when Dončić has missed games, went for 44 at Toronto on Dec. 4. But after the game, having faced the full force of the opposition’s game plan, Reaves simply said he couldn’t wait until Luka was back.
