So here's the thing about Louis Vuitton - it's basically the brand that turned luggage into legend. And yeah, I know what you're thinking: "It's just expensive bags with that brown pattern." But stick with me here, because there's actually something kind of fascinating going on.
Founded in 1854 by Louis Vuitton himself, this French luxury fashion house has built an empire on everything from luxury bags and leather goods to ready-to-wear, shoes, perfumes, watches, jewelry, accessories, sunglasses and books. The iconic LV monogram? It's everywhere. And I mean everywhere - to the point where it's become one of those things you either love or pretend you don't notice (but you totally do).
What's interesting is how they've managed to stay relevant for over 170 years. For six consecutive years between 2006 and 2012, Louis Vuitton was named the world's most valuable luxury brand, with a 2012 valuation of $25.9 billion. That's not nothing. But here's where it gets really smart: they've never discounted. Ever. Louis Vuitton never discounts its products, and items advertised as discounted on the Web are invariably fake. It's a bold move that basically says "our stuff is worth what we say it's worth, take it or leave it."
The company's distribution strategy is pretty tight too. Today, Vuitton products are primarily available at company-owned Louis Vuitton boutiques, with a small number of exceptions noted in upscale shopping districts or inside luxury department stores. They learned their lesson after being widely available in department stores back in the 1980s - now they control almost everything about how and where you can buy their products.
And then there's the craftsmanship angle. Since the 19th century, Louis Vuitton trunks have been made by hand, with craftsmen lining up the leather and canvas, tapping in tiny nails one by one and securing five-letter solid pick-proof brass locks with individual handmade keys. It's the kind of detail that justifies those eye-watering price tags - at least in theory.
But Louis Vuitton isn't stuck in the past. They've been surprisingly savvy about social media and digital engagement. Louis Vuitton generated the highest average cross-channel engagements per post at 66.7K and has the largest cross-channel following of any brand in the luxury landscape at 102M, growing their following by 11.8% from the previous year. They've worked with YouTubers, launched LVTV on YouTube, and generally figured out how to make luxury feel accessible (even if the actual products aren't).
The brand's also been smart about celebrity partnerships and collaborations. From working with artists like Takashi Murakami to appointing Pharrell Williams as creative director of men's wear, they keep finding ways to stay in the cultural conversation. Notice how Louis Vuitton bags show up in music videos, on red carpets, and all over Instagram? That's not an accident.
Louis Vuitton merged with Moët Hennessy in 1987 to create LVMH, of which it is a subsidiary - basically becoming part of the world's largest luxury goods conglomerate. That kind of backing means they can invest in everything from flagship stores to digital innovation to those hand-painted trunks that cost more than a car.
At the end of the day, Louis Vuitton has figured out something most brands struggle with: how to be both heritage and hype, traditional and trendy, exclusive yet everywhere. Whether you're saving up for your first Speedy or just admiring from afar, you've got to admit - they've mastered the art of making people want what they're selling.
